I've known I wanted to be a photographer for as long as I can remember.
Growing up, I studied black and white photography and darkroom printing in Glasgow alongside my A-levels and I was completely hooked. There's something almost magical about standing in a darkroom watching an image slowly emerge in the developer tray. That moment when the photograph begins to appear, as if from nowhere — I still admire images which I printed myself and which hang on the walls of my house now.
From there, I landed my first job as an apprentice with one of Glasgow's best wedding photographers, Ian Barry Photography, based on the wonderfully lively Sauchiehall Street. The studio was seriously busy and most Saturdays the team would cover up to seven weddings in a single day. I learned fast, not just photography and colour printing, but also the importance of the lunch run (and developed a temporary appreciation for Hawaiian pizza in the process).
I was nineteen when I was trusted to photograph my first wedding on my own. I still remember the groom looking at me and saying, "Is this wee lass going to take our wedding photos?". I did, and the rest, as they say, is history.
During my apprenticeship I was allowed to take home a Hasselblad medium format camera to practise with — a privilege I didn't take lightly. Fun fact: Hasselblads were the only cameras used by NASA astronauts to photograph the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Those iconic images of Earth from space? Also Hasselblad. Not a bad camera to learn on.
A lifetime later, I'm based in a stunning warehouse studio in Chiswick, West London, specialising exclusively in maternity photography. For newborn sessions, I travel to you as there's nothing quite like photographing a new baby in the comfort of your own home. I made the decision around twenty years ago to focus on this one chapter of life — pregnancy and new parenthood — because I believe it deserves that level of dedication. Every session I shoot, I bring the same attention and care I've been developing since those darkroom days in Glasgow. The technology has changed enormously. The love of the craft hasn't. When you come to my studio, you'll be guided through every moment. You won't need to know how to pose, what to do with your hands, or how to look natural in front of a camera as I'll be here to guide you through it all. I just need you to show up(hopefully quite excited about the session), relax, and let yourself be celebrated for a couple of hours.
