Why Less Is More for Studio Maternity Portraits
There is a particular kind of beauty in a maternity portrait that asks for nothing extra. Just you, your changing shape, thoughtful light and enough space for the photograph to breathe.
When I photograph an expectant mum in my London studio, I am not trying to make a hundred unrelated images. I want to create a striking collection that feels connected: portraits you will love individually and that look even more beautiful together.
Finding the portraits that suit you
We can talk before your maternity photoshoot about the images you are drawn to, whether that means elegant black and white portraits, flowing fabric, simple clothing or artistic pregnancy nudes. But some of the most important decisions happen when we meet.

At the studio, I’ll notice how your hair falls and the way you naturally hold yourself. As we photograph, I’ll find the light and angles that flatter you and show your bump beautifully. With over 20 years of experience, I’ll guide you through each pose and create a series of portraits that feels personal to you. You don’t need to know how to pose.
Sometimes I can already see two images that would make a lovely pair: perhaps one close portrait and one full-length image with the same light and mood. At other times, I see a triptych, with three photographs that tell a quiet story together. A turn of the shoulders, a hand resting on your belly, a different silhouette: each image adds something while still belonging to the same collection.

A collection made to live with
In a maternity photography studio, a simple background keeps your pregnancy at the centre of the image. Light, shape and expression do the work. That simplicity makes it easier to create portraits that complement each other, whether you display a pair above a bed or frame three images together along a wall.

It also means you do not need endless near-identical photographs to remember this time. I would rather create a considered selection in which every portrait has a purpose. Your gallery will still give you choices; the goal is for the images you choose to feel like a complete body of work.

Why an outdoor pregnancy photoshoot feels different
An outdoor pregnancy photoshoot has a different appeal. London becomes part of the story, and a change of scenery can bring a new mood to each photograph.

A couple might choose a place that feels like their London: the view of the Thames from Richmond Hill, the open spaces and Hill Garden and Pergola at Hampstead Heath, or Greenwich in autumn. Around Westminster, the London Eye and Big Ben offer different backdrops within a short walk. The Millennium Bridge, affectionately known as the Wobbly Bridge, frames St Paul’s Cathedral beautifully, while Tower Bridge offers another riverside setting. As the surroundings change, so do the photographs.
For couples living or working in London who may one day move elsewhere, those familiar places can carry an extra layer of meaning. The images recall not only the pregnancy, but also the city that was home while they waited for their baby.

I used to offer sessions that combined studio portraits with outdoor photographs. The outdoor part gave clients plenty of variety, yet when they chose their favourites, they nearly always selected more images from the studio. It showed me how powerful a simple portrait can be. Without a busy background, the focus stays on you, your bump and the feeling of this moment.
The beauty of keeping it simple
That experience helped shape the way I photograph maternity sessions today. I look for portraits that belong together and feel beautiful enough to display, rather than making more images simply for the sake of variety.
