The Woman Who Inspired Me to Become a Maternity Photographer

The phone call that changed everything came from a young man, quietly spoken, asking whether I photographed tasteful nude and semi-nude portraits of women.

His partner was 27 years old. There was a history of breast cancer in her family, and she had made the difficult decision to have a double mastectomy. He wanted to give her something she could keep — beautiful portraits of her body as it was, a reminder of herself before everything changed.

She came to my studio with a friend for confidence and support. From the moment she arrived, my priority was making sure she felt safe, celebrated and completely at ease. I loved everything about that session — the conversations, the laughter, the connection, and the process of gently guiding her into poses that felt natural and flattering. Watching her relax and begin to see herself differently was something I have never forgotten.

When I got home that evening, I sat with my husband and said:

“I am going to become a maternity photographer.”

I had found the work I was meant to do.

That was the beginning of more than two decades photographing women during some of the most significant and transformative moments of their lives.

My own maternity self-portrait.

Today, as a maternity photographer in London, every pregnancy photography session I create is built around the same belief: that every woman deserves to feel beautiful, confident and seen. My role is to create a calm and welcoming space where she can relax, trust the process and leave with maternity portraits she will treasure for a lifetime.

Years later, I received a phone call. She was well. They had married. I still think about that session, and it remains the story I tell whenever someone asks me why I became a maternity photographer.

It’s incredible how a single afternoon in a studio can become something far more meaningful than just photographs.

My connection to maternity photography became even deeper when I photographed my own maternity portraits while pregnant with my second son. I attempted the flowing fabric images I loved so much — only to discover that some fabrics are rather less “flowing” than they appear!

But that experience gave me something I carry into every session today: a true understanding of how vulnerable, emotional and quietly extraordinary it feels to stand in front of a camera while your body is changing.

It is that understanding I bring to every maternity photoshoot in my West London studio — whether creating elegant pregnancy portraits, intimate fine art maternity images, or natural photographs with your partner and family.

The trust you place in me is something I never take lightly.
